Key Points

  • Transport for London (TfL) is giving away one free Golden Ticket for the London Cable Car.
  • The Golden Ticket will give its holder 20 years of unlimited free journeys on the Dangleway, which stretches over the Thames between Greeenwich Peninsula and the Royal Docks.
  • TfL is celebrating 20 million customer journeys on the London Cable Car since its launch in 2012.
  • While offering a novel experience and terrific views for Londoners and tourists alike, the cable car ranks among the least-used pieces of transport infrastructure in the capital.

Transport for London (TfL) is hosting a competition where one lucky Londoner will win a 20-year ‘Golden Ticket’ pass for the London Cable Car.

The competition, which is being held to celebrate 20 million journeys on the cable car, also known as the Dangleway, is open from 3-16 August, and will offer the chance to win 20 years of free journeys on the only urban cable car in the UK.

The Golden Ticket entitles the winner to unlimited travel on the London Cable Car for 20 years and is valid for both one-way and round-trip journeys.

The London Cable Car runs over the River Thames between Greenwich Peninsula and the Royal Docks, offering a unique view of the London cityscape to passengers as they ride in a cabin with a glass floor 90 metres above the river.

Passengers can also book a Champagne Experience, enjoying a glass of bubbly as they travel and take in the sights over the river, and the Cable Car has hosted several events over the years, from live music performances to dining experiences.

“To reach 20 million customers is an incredible achievement and one we’re hugely proud of,” said Head of London Cable Car Fiona Jones.

“The London Cable Car has become a much-loved part of London’s transport and leisure offering, giving people the chance to see the city from a completely different perspective.”

“Whether it’s a visitor seeing London for the first time or a local rediscovering their city, we’re delighted to be part of that experience and look forward to welcoming many more customers in the years to come,” Jones said.

Being the only urban cable car in the United Kingdom, the Dangleway offers a unique way of seeing the capital while crossing over the Thames, but no one would defend its success as a piece of effective transport infrastructure alone.

Active since June 2012, the Cable Car’s facilitation of 20 million journeys ranks it easily among the least-used modes of transport operated by TfL, and with one-way tickets priced at £7 for adults, it is also among the most expensive.

By comparison, the highly successful Elizabeth line, which connects Reading, Heathrow and Abbey Wood to Central London, recorded more than 500 million passenger journeys in its first two and half years of operation.
