British households urged to fix energy deals before January to save £317
Households across the United Kingdom are being urged to switch to fixed-tariff energy deals before the January 2027 price cap kicks in.
A new analysis by Uswitch has found that while the cheapest fixed energy tariffs in the UK are currently higher than the current energy price cap set by Ofgem, they are still significantly lower than the price cap expected to kick in from January 2027.
Ofgem will confirm its January price cap later this month, and Uswitch pointed to predictions that it will climb by 27%, rising from £1,723 to £2,186 per year.
This gives consumers a chance to shield themselves from the expected price cap increase by fixing their tariff today, while fixed tariffs are still only higher than the current energy price cap.
Uswitch found that there are currently 32 fixed energy deals available that undercut the expected January price cap, and the organisation urged consumers to compare fixed tariff energy deals to determine whether they can save money on their bills.
According to the analysis conducted by Uswitch, the cheapest fixed deals currently available could leave a typical household up to £317 a year better off if the expected January price cap increases take effect.
“January’s worrying forecast is quickly becoming more and more likely. The price cap, which millions of households energy bills are dictated by, is predicted to jump by around 27% in the new year,” said Uswitch energy expert Molly Hudson.
“But there are other options. The cheapest fixed deals could leave a typical household up to £317 a year better off than the current forecasts.”
“The fixed tariffs on the market right now are priced slightly higher priced than the current cap, so this is less about an instant saving and more about certainty and protection,” she said.
“Locking in now means you know what you will be paying through the coldest months, and will avoid the imminent price increase.”
