O2 has switched on its 5G+ network across Bristol, reaching up to 495,000 people.
The operator announced the rollout on Tuesday (6 October), saying the upgrade brings faster speeds, better reliability and lower latency at no extra cost.
The network covers the city centre and Harbourside, along with surrounding neighbourhoods and Avonmouth.
Virgin Media O2 said every town and city in its 5G+ programme has at least 90% outdoor 5G+ coverage.
5G+ is O2’s name for its 5G Standalone network. Earlier versions of 5G relied on existing 4G infrastructure, while 5G+ runs on new standalone equipment built for faster and more responsive mobile services.
Customers need a compatible device and plan, as well as an up-to-date SIM, to connect. Some customers may need to switch to a digital eSIM, and O2 lists full eligibility details on its website.
“Reliable connectivity is increasingly essential to how people live, work and do business, which is why we’re continuing to invest in strengthening our network in the city,” said Robert Joyce, Director of Mobile Access Engineering at O2.
“This rollout is part of our £700 million Mobile Transformation Plan and brings 5G+ to more customers across Bristol,” Joyce added.
“With faster speeds, lower latency and improved reliability, the upgrade will deliver high-quality coverage that helps our customers stay connected when it matters most.”
Part of a £700 million network upgrade
Virgin Media O2’s £700 million Mobile Transformation Plan funds the Bristol rollout and runs throughout 2026.
The plan covers new masts, small cells, 4G and 5G upgrades, automation and new spectrum deployment across the UK.
Independent benchmarking firm Umlaut Connect named Virgin Media O2 Europe’s most improved mobile network in 2025.
The operator also won Best Mobile Network Coverage at the Uswitch Telecoms Awards for the second year running.
