The fastest broadband network in the UK revealed
Key Points
- Virgin Media has been ranked by SpeedGeo as the fastest broadband network in the UK.
- SpeedGeo ranked fixed and mobile broadband providers based on 874,769 tests conducted on its platform in the United Kingdom.
- The comparison only includes providers that account for more than 3% of all tests in a given location, excluding many smaller networks.
- In London, the fastest broadband network was Community Fibre, which significantly outstripped Virgin Media in second place.
Speed test platform SpeedGeo has published its latest broadband speed report for the United Kingdom, naming Virgin Media the fastest broadband network in the country.
SpeedGeo measured 874,769 tests conducted across fixed and mobile broadband providers by users on cable or Wi-Fi connections in the United Kingdom.
While Virgin Media ranks comfortably as the fastest network in the UK, it is important to note that SpeedGeo’s methodology omits a large number of smaller broadband providers with less market penetration that might have higher average speeds.
This is because SpeedGeo only has access to speed test data generated by users, and its rankings only include operators that account for more than 3% of all tests conducted on its platform during a given quarter.
The country-wide comparison therefore only encompasses a limited range of major providers, including Vodafone, Sky, EE, and Three.
Broadband network speed rankings – UK
Below are SpeedGeo’s rankings for the fastest broadband networks in the United Kingdom, including mobile and fixed broadband providers.
| Internet Provider | Download Speed | Upload Speed | Ping (ms) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Virgin Media | 283,7Mbps | 52,9Mbps | 24ms |
| Vodafone | 207,1Mbps | 93,2Mbps | 23ms |
| EE | 151,7Mbps | 38,7Mbps | 21ms |
| Sky | 147,9Mbps | 46,9Mbps | 16ms |
| TalkTalk | 107,9Mbps | 38,8Mbps | 18ms |
| Three | 97,8Mbps | 20,8Mbps | 45ms |
| All ISPs | 178,1Mbps | 81,2Mbps | 29ms |
Virgin Media also held the top spot on SpeedGeo’s ranking last year, and has maintained its position with an average download speed significantly higher than Vodafone in second place.
When looking at mobile Internet speeds, SpeedGeo’s data showed that Three had the fastest average download speed of 113.8Mbps, followed by EE, Vodafone, and O2 in second, third, and fourth places, respectively.
Broadband network speed rankings – London
In addition to providing countrywide data, SpeedGeo also published location-specific rankings of average broadband speeds.
This data shows that in the 12 months from July 2025 to June 2026, the fastest broadband internet provider in London was Community Fibre, followed by Virgin Media in second place.
Community Fibre was not included in the countrywide comparison as it did not account for more than 3% of all tests across the UK, but it did so in London and is therefore included here.
| Internet Provider | Download Speed | Upload Speed | Ping |
|---|---|---|---|
| Community Fibre | 425,3Mbps | 357,2Mbps | 10ms |
| Virgin Media | 239,2Mbps | 46,4Mbps | 18ms |
| Vodafone | 230,6Mbps | 36,7Mbps | 12ms |
| EE | 139,6Mbps | 37,9Mbps | 14ms |
| Three | 126,8Mbps | 22,9Mbps | 30ms |
| Sky | 105,0Mbps | 28,5Mbps | 11ms |
| TalkTalk | 63,9Mbps | 18,9Mbps | 14ms |
| All ISPs | 184,0Mbps | 90,7Mbps | 20ms |
It is important to note when comparing average speed rankings that speed test data does not necessarily reflect the potential capability of a network.
For example, while a provider’s infrastructure may offer speeds of up to 1Gbps, that company’s customers may more often opt for cheaper packages with lower speeds, which would reflect as a lower ranking in this comparison.
Additionally, many broadband networks in the UK still offer copper connectivity, which is significantly slower than fibre and could drag down their average speeds.
