Virgin Media is shutting down its email service

Key Points

  • Virgin Media has announced it is closing down its email services and will deactivate inactive accounts.
  • Customers with ntlworld.com, blueyonder.co.uk, virgin.net and virginmedia.com are affected by the change.
  • Affected customers can choose to migrate to email provider Junara, download their data and move to another provider, or close their Virgin Media email account.
  • Virgin will begin contacting affected customers this month and providing them with these three options.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media announced that it will officially close down its email services, with customers given the option of moving to a new provider or to close their account.

The change will affect any customers who have an email inbox operated by Virgin Media, including those with ntlworld.com, blueyonder.co.uk, virgin.net and virginmedia.com email addresses.

Customers with a Virgin Media email account will be contacted by the operator and will have the following options:

  • Sign up and move their existing email service to Junara
  • Download their emails and data and move to another provider of their choice
  • Close their existing Virgin Media email account

After receiving their first communication regarding the closure of Virgin Media email services, customers will have 45 days to decide which of the above options suits them best.

If a customer misses this communication, they will have an additional 120 days to take action. After this total period of 165 days, if customers have not responded to Virgin Media’s communications, their email account will be permanently deleted.

Virgin said that it would begin contacting customers in September to begin the process of closing down its email services.

If existing Virgin Media broadband, landline, or TV customers choose to migrate their email address to Junara, they will receive the first 12 months of the new email service free of charge, apart from a 99p transfer fee. Former customers will need to sign up to a standard plan with Junara to migrate their address.

Virgin Media stopped offering new email accounts in 2022, and said that by transferring the remaining email accounts it provides to a dedicated email provider it can better focus on its broadband and TV offerings.

“While most people use an email platform not provided by their broadband provider, we know this isn’t the case for everyone, and we understand the importance of these email accounts to those that still use them,” said Virgin Media O2 Chief Operating Officer Alan Stott.

“We know changes like this can cause concern, so we want to give impacted customers clear information, enough time to decide on the best next steps for them and provide extra support where required.”
