Dyson unveils camera-equipped toothbrush that costs £420

Key Points

  • Dyson has launched a new electric toothbrush equipped with a high-tech camera.
  • The CameraJet toothbrush analyses images of your teeth as you brush and fires jets of mouthwash into the gaps between them, allowing you to floss as you brush.
  • It is equipped with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, an RFID tag, and an anti-gravity tank for reliable mouthwash dispersal.
  • The toothbrush is the result of six years of research and development, and it is available to order in the UK today for £419.99.

Dyson has launched a new electric toothbrush which flosses while you brush and features a built-in camera, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.

The company, which manufacturers an increasingly diverse range of products, from vacuum cleaners and fans to hair straighteners, has worked for six years to research and develop its new CameraJet toothbrush, which it says is the only toothbrush with a camera that allows you to floss while you brush.

In the head of the toothbrush is a macro lens camera that analyses 28 live images per second. A machine learning algorithm is then employed to identify and target gaps between teeth in real time, at which point the toothbrush fires a precision burst of mouthrinse where it is needed.

By using a conical jet instead of the needle-type jet used by traditional water flossers, this jet burst of mouthwash is engineered to remove plaque while being relatively gentle on gums and enamel, and allows users to brush and floss their teeth simultaneously.

Mouthwash is stored in a 12.5ml ‘anti-gravity’ tank that allows it to be effectively dispersed no matter which way the toothbrush is being held, which Dyson said helps to prevent the device from ‘firing blanks’.

Bristles vibrate with sonic oscillation, which keeps them in constant motion and prevents stalling, and the brush head is equipped with an RFID tag to alert users when it should be replaced. The Dyson CameraJet toothbrush also has a docking station for easy recharging, as well as a replaceable battery.

“Flossing is an awkward and time-consuming chore. Few of us do it even though we know we should,” said founder and chief engineer James Dyson.

“Dyson engineers and scientists have spent well over a decade understanding oral care regimes and how nasties build up in the mouth. Our research has shown that people consistently miss the areas where plaque forms: the gaps between teeth.”

“We wanted to solve three fundamental problems: how to see those gaps, remove plaque, and how to improve cleaning performance while brushing,” he said.

The Dyson CameraJet is available to order in the UK from the company’s official website. It is priced at £419.99 and includes a travel case, mouthwash, toothpaste, and spare brush head.
