Respondents reporting the highest loneliness scores in England’s largest loneliness study clustered in the country’s three biggest urban centres.
Researchers at Imperial College London mapped responses from 135,725 participants using the full postcodes they supplied, aggregating them to Lower Super Output Area level to preserve anonymity.
Kernel density estimation then produced heat maps of where people reporting high scores on the UCLA loneliness scale and the Office for National Statistics direct measure were concentrated.
London, Birmingham and Manchester showed up as the densest hotspots.
The authors link the pattern to the “urban paradox”, the observed tendency for cities offering greater economic, cultural and social opportunity to record lower life satisfaction and social connection than rural areas.
Rural communities often face geographic isolation through thin transport links and services, but research cited in the paper credits them with stronger intergenerational networks and higher neighbourhood cohesion.
The mapping carries a significant caveat in that response numbers varied widely between regions, so the hotspots reflect where people reporting loneliness happened to fill in the survey rather than genuine geographic differences across the wider population.
The authors state that the maps indicate clustering within the sample only and rule out any inference about geographic patterns in England as a whole.
They argue the approach still has value for planning. Spatial data at neighbourhood level can generate hypotheses and guide services, and the paper flags urban design and public space as areas worth further investigation.
Volunteers completed the online survey between March and July 2023 after recruitment through NHS primary care networks, voluntary sector organisations, social media and the National Institute for Health and Care Research’s Be Part of Research network.
The sample over-represents graduates and under-represents minority ethnic groups.
