The government has confirmed that the construction of a new railway station in East London can go ahead, unlocking housing and business growth in the area.
The Beam Park station, which has been stuck in the planning phase for years, will be situated on the c2c railway network between Dagenham Dock and Rainham.
As part of its New Homes Accelerator programme, the government confirmed that a new Beam Park rail station can be accommodated within the existing rail network to serve the major 4,000-home regeneration site in the area.
Next, TfL, the Greater London Authority, and the London Borough of Havering will work together to assemble the funding needed to deliver this new station.
Over the past year, the government has worked closely with relevant parties to unlock development in Beam Park while resolving longstanding funding challenges. So far, more than 1,100 homes have been completed, and over 1,200 are currently under construction.
The London Borough of Havering has welcomed the approval for the Beam Park station, stating that this would unlock key growth in the area.
“We have always said that we would do all we can to ensure Beam Park station is built,” said Havering Council Leader Ray Morgon.
“We are grateful for the support from the Ministry for Homes, Communities, and Local Government (MHCLG) Homes Accelerator in helping to get to this point.”
“The station is much needed for Beam Park and neighbouring Dagenham, which will enable housing and business growth in this key area,” he said.
“It is also a key piece of infrastructure that will support the existing community in the south of the borough. Without a station, the area will remain in a transport vacuum.”
He noted that due to the delays in this project being approved, the costs have gone up significantly, but said that the council is supporting the GLA and other partners who are examining ways to meet the funding gap.
