Zipcar officially exits the UK
Ride-sharing service Zipcar has confirmed that it will officially cease operating in the UK after holding consultations with staff.
In a notice sent to users on 1 December, the group said it has started formal consultations with its UK employees about the decision, and that further announcements about the decision would follow after this process.
Following these consultations, the firm has now confirmed that all accounts will be closed as it exits the market.
“On 1 December 2025 we announced that we were proposing to cease the UK operations of Zipcar. Following formal consultation with our UK employees, we can now confirm that Zipcar will cease operating in the UK,” said James Taylor (General Manager of Zipcar UK) in a statement on Friday (16 January).
“In accordance with clause 7.5 of the member terms, please take this as your written notice that we will formally close your account in 30 days’ time. It’s not possible to make any new bookings with Zipcar UK at this time, but your account will remain open until 16 February 2026.”
Taylor added that users who would like to see what other car-sharing options are available in their area can visit the national charity for shared transport, CoMoUK’s website.
“On behalf of the entire Zipcar UK team, whether you used Zipcar occasionally or regularly, we’d like to thank you for being a member and being part of our journey,” he said.
The company did not give any formal reasoning behind the closure, but news coverage of the decision suggests rising operational costs, incoming congestion charge changes and the costs of parking as contributing factors.
