DLR extension to go ahead with strong public support
The majority of the public support the extension of the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), which was officially greenlit by the government in its Autumn Budget.
This was shown by a public consultation by Transport for London (TfL) on its proposed extension of the DLR, which has received widespread support from the public.
The proposals would see the DLR extended from Gallions Reach to new DLR stations at Beckton Riverside and Thamesmead via a tunnel under the Thames, as well as new bus services between Woolwich, Abbey Wood, and Thamesmead stations.
76% of people surveyed by TfL supported the proposed route, with 77% supporting the proposed station in Thamesmead town centre. Many respondents also voiced their support for a further extension of the DLR beyond Thamesmead to Abbey Wood or Bexley.
TfL said its current focus is on delivering this extension to Thamesmead but added that its design would also support future expansion of the service.
In the Autumn Budget, Chancellor Rachel Reeves authorised TfL and the Greater London Authority to secure funding for the project, which TfL says will deliver up to 30,000 new homes and 10,000 new jobs, and attract almost £18 billion in private investment.
The DLR was previously extended to Woolwich Arsenal in 2009, which saw a significant boost in housing stock in Woolwich, Canning Town, and the Royal Docks.
“I’m really pleased that the Government is backing the DLR extension to Thamesmead – something I’ve long called for alongside London’s businesses and communities,” said London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan.
“The project is a win-win and a massive vote of confidence in London. It will not only transform travel in a historically underserved part of the capital, but also unlock thousands of new jobs and homes, boosting the economy not just locally but nationally.”
“I look forward to working hand in hand with Ministers to deliver this vital project as we continue building a more prosperous London for everyone,” he said.
