Mayor Sadiq Khan reveals the latest murder statistics for London
Early figures released by London Mayor Sadiq Khan show a significant reduction in the number of homicides in the capital city.
According to data cited by the Mayor, London recorded the fewest number of homicides across June, July and August since 2018. Provisional figures also showed that there were no under-25 homicides recorded in the city over the school summer holidays.
Only 10 under-25 homicides have been recorded in London so far this year, significantly fewer than the 26 recorded by the same time last year. Early figures show that the number of teenage homicides has also been reduced.
The total number of homicides across all ages in London has fallen from 78 to 58 compared to the same point last year, continuing an ongoing trend of homicide and knife crime reduction in the city.
Khan said that nothing is more important to him than keeping Londoners safe, and he cited the Met’s proactive approach to tackling serious violence as a major factor in addressing violent crime.
This approach includes targeting organised criminal drug dealing and county lines groups, as well as providing more support for young people to divert them away from violence and towards employment.
“Nothing is more important to me than keeping Londoners safe and it is encouraging that we have had the fewest number of homicides in London across June, July and August in years, with no under-25 homicides during the school summer holiday period,” Khan said.
“The summer months are traditionally a very challenging time of year with young people more at risk of exploitation and violence, but through London’s Violence Reduction Unit and the Met Police we’ve been working incredibly hard with partners across the capital to provide support and help.
“These latest figures show that this work is making a difference, but I’m very clear that one death is one too many and I will continue to do all I can with our partners to tackle violence and its causes, as we build a safer London for everyone,” Khan said.
