Monzo activates backup bank as UK customers report issues

Key Points

  • Monzo activated Monzo Stand-in, its independent backup bank, on Wednesday 19 August 2026 after UK customers reported app and payment problems.
  • Downdetector recorded more than 3,000 reports, roughly three quarters of them about the app.
  • Card payments, cash withdrawals, card freezing and bank transfers continued working through the backup system.
  • Stand-in runs on Google Cloud, separately from Monzo's main platform on Amazon Web Services, and switches the app to a simplified interface.
  • The incident follows a Lloyds Banking Group outage earlier the same week.

Monzo switched to its independent backup bank on Wednesday (19 August) after customers across the UK reported problems opening the app and moving money.

Downdetector logged more than 3,000 reports about the digital bank, around three quarters of them relating to the app, with customers also posting on social media that they could not transfer money or reach their funds.

Readers told HotMinute that payment notifications arrived several times over for single transactions, that the app would not let them in, and that other errors appeared alongside.

The bank confirmed the switch in a public statement, saying it had identified issues affecting Monzo and turned on Monzo Stand-in, its fully independent backup bank.

Card payments, cash withdrawals, card freezing and incoming and outgoing bank transfers continued to work through the backup system, and Monzo said it was rolling out a fix to restore full service.

Monzo’s own status page listed delays with payments processing, and monitoring sites recorded a warning state lasting close to two hours from late morning.

How Monzo Stand-in works

Monzo Stand-in is a separate set of systems running on Google Cloud Platform that takes over from the bank’s primary platform, which runs on Amazon Web Services, during a major incident.

It covers spending on cards, withdrawing cash, sending and receiving bank transfers, checking balances and transactions, and freezing or unfreezing cards.

The Monzo app checks in the background whether Stand-in is active and switches to a simplified interface built around those core features.

The system had its first full deployment in August 2024, during an outage lasting roughly an hour that affected most of Monzo’s systems, including payment processing and the app.

Monzo launched the platform properly in March 2025, and used it again during an app failure in January this year.

A week of outages

Lloyds Banking Group suffered an outage earlier this week, leaving Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland customers without access to online and mobile services.

Treasury Committee figures published in 2025 showed nine of the largest banks and building societies operating in the UK accumulated at least 803 hours of technology outages over two years, the equivalent of more than 33 days.

A three-day outage at Barclays caused 56% of online payments to fail, with the bank expecting to pay between £5 million and £7.5 million in compensation.
