Millions of UK shoppers could get £70 from Mastercard payout – Check if you can claim
Millions of consumers across the UK are eligible for a payout of up to £70 each following a historic £200-million settlement approved by the Competition Appeal Tribunal.
This settlement is the largest settlement of a group litigation for the benefit of UK consumers and resolves a long-running class action brought by Walter Merricks against Mastercard, which will now allow UK consumers who are part of the class to claim their share of the £200-million payout.
Individuals who qualify as part of the class will be able to register by completing a simple online form, after which they will potentially receive a minimum of £45 and a maximum of £70 each, depending on the number of claimants.
In its judgement, the Competition Appeal Tribunal stated that the £200-million settlement was just and reasonable. Litigation funder Innsworth Capital sought to argue that it should receive at £179 million and that affected UK consumers should receive a maximum of £4 each, but the tribunal rejected this challenge.
Can you claim a payout of up to £70?
You are automatically a member of the affected class and therefore eligible for compensation if all of the following apply:
- You lived in the UK (for at least a continuous period of three months) between 22 May 1992 and 21 June 2008.
- You were aged 16 or over during this time.
- You bought goods and services (for non-business purposes) from businesses selling in the UK, irrespective of the means of payment used.
- You were living in the UK on 6 September 2016.
Note that UK consumers do not have to have ever owned a Mastercard payment card to be a member of the affected class.
Official information on how to claim will be posted on the Mastercard Consumer Claim website in the coming weeks.
