O2 says rising phone prices will make payment plans a focus in the UK

Virgin Media O2 says that flexible payment plans will remain key focus in its plans going forwards as smartphones become increasingly expensive.

This week O2 launched SIM-free financing, a flexible payment offering which enables customers to purchase a new or refurbished phone without an airtime plan. Customers can spread the cost of this purchase using finance options which range from three months to two years.

O2 said that the introduction of SIM-free financing means customers can buy a phone standalone, giving them more choice and flexibility when buying their next device.

The offering also allows customers to repay early without penalties, track balances, manage payments and access customer support via an app.

SIM-free financing will be available on the following phones:

  • iPhone 16 128GB (brand new device)
  • Samsung Galaxy A57 (brand new device)
  • Google Pixel 10a (brand new device)
  • iPhone 17 256GB (Like New device)
  • Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra (Like New device)
  • Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra (Like New device)

In response to questions from HotMinute, O2 said it regularly reviews its products and services to ensure they continue to meet customers’ needs and expectations.

“Right now, the selection of phones available with SIM-free financing is based on popular devices we know our customers are looking to buy, but we’re open to expanding the range of devices in future.

“Providing our customers with great value and flexibility is core to O2’s offering. We know that choosing the right phone can feel like a big decision, which is why we have introduced the option of SIM-free financing.”

It noted that its payment plans, offered via Affirm, are clear and transparent so customers know the total repayment amount and monthly instalments before committing, helping them to decide if the cost works for their budget.

“The offering has only just launched but we expect it to be a helpful option for our customers.

“We want to provide choice and flexibility so our customers can get the phone they want. Whether that’s the latest smartphone or a refurbished device. As technology advances and becomes more expensive, ensuring our customers have flexible payment options that suit their budget will remain a focus.”
