Key Points
- Sainsbury’s launched AI-powered SmartLists in its app on 7 October.
- Lists start from typing, speech, a photo or a meal idea.
- Items match real products, including Nectar Prices, and go straight to the trolley.
- Product Finder helps customers locate items in store.
- The app now combines online orders, ChopChop, SmartShop and Nectar.
Sainsbury’s has launched SmartLists, an AI-powered shopping list tool, inside its redesigned app.
The supermarket announced the feature as part of a wider upgrade that brings online grocery orders, SmartShop, ChopChop and Nectar together in a single app for the first time.
SmartLists lets customers build a shopping list by typing, speaking or taking a photo of what they need.
Customers can photograph a list they have already written down or type a meal idea such as spaghetti bolognese or a pasta bake.
The tool then matches each item to real Sainsbury’s products, including Nectar Prices, so customers can compare their options against their budget.
Shoppers can add those products straight to their trolley for online orders, rather than adding every item to a list one by one.
A built-in Product Finder also helps customers locate products when shopping in store.
Sainsbury’s said this would free up store colleagues to spend more time on customer support.
The upgraded app carries a new “S” logo and now includes:
- Online grocery orders
- ChopChop rapid delivery
- SmartLists
- In-store SmartShop
- Nectar points and Nectar Prices
Customers no longer need to switch between separate apps to use these services.
“We know our customers are busy and want shopping to feel simple, joyful and easy to fit around their lives,” said Ben Edge, Director of Product at Sainsbury’s.
“SmartLists is designed to take the effort out of creating and buying a shopping list, whether customers are typing, speaking or taking a picture of what they need,” Edge added.
“By bringing more of our services together in one app, we’re making it easier for customers to plan their shop, build their basket and find products in store, however and whenever they choose to shop with us,” he said.
Sainsbury’s operates more than 600 supermarkets and over 885 convenience stores across the UK.
