How long it will take to download GTA VI – based on your UK broadband connection
Key Points
- GTA VI could take almost 45 hours to download on 10Mbps copper broadband
- The UK median speed of 73.21Mbps means a wait of up to six hours
- A 1Gbps full fibre connection cuts the download to 20 to 27 minutes
- GTA VI launches on 19 November, with an expected size of 150GB to 200GB
Wildanet says GTA VI could take almost 45 hours to download on a 10Mbps copper connection in the UK.
The Cornwall and Devon full fibre provider calculated download times for Rockstar Games’ upcoming title across a range of broadband speeds.
GTA VI launches on 19 November, and early reports suggest the game will take up between 150GB and 200GB of storage. Some estimates put the download as large as 600GB.
Wildanet calculated the following download times for a game between 150GB and 200GB in size:
- 10Mbps copper broadband: 33 to 45 hours
- 73.21Mbps, the UK median broadband speed: four and a half to six hours
- 500Mbps full fibre: under an hour
- 1Gbps full fibre: 20 to 27 minutes
The company said these figures do not account for game updates, busy launch-day servers or Wi-Fi signal problems in the home. It added that other people using the same connection during the download would extend the wait further.
“Nobody wants to spend release day watching a progress bar, especially when a big download can also slow down streaming, home working, video calls and everything else people rely on their connection for,” said Simon Hughes, Chief Commercial Officer at Wildanet.
“For people still using older copper broadband, downloading a game of this size could mean waiting more than a day and tying up the home internet in the process,” Hughes said.
Wildanet said the growing size of games, software updates and streaming content is widening the gap between households on full fibre and those still on copper networks. The company is currently rolling out full fibre broadband across Cornwall and Devon.
