Ultra-rapid EV chargers to be rolled out across London

Transport for London (TfL) has set out plans for a new wave of rapid and ultra-rapid electric vehicle (EV) charging bays and hubs across the capital as part of its updated Corporate Environment Plan.
TfL said in a statement announcing the plan that it is working with charge point operators Zest and TotalEnergies to bring forward new rapid and ultra-rapid charging bays on its estate. The work forms part of a wider EV infrastructure delivery programme.
Places for London, the wholly owned property company of TfL, has partnered with charging hub operator Fastned to develop several new ultra-rapid charging hubs across its land. London already has the largest EV charging network in the UK, according to TfL.
The charging expansion sits within a plan of more than 70 actions covering air quality, carbon emissions, climate adaptation, biodiversity and resource use. TfL first published its Corporate Environment Plan in 2021 and the 2026 version builds on that work.
TfL also committed to transitioning its own fleet to zero emission, going beyond the third of London’s buses that already produce no emissions at the tailpipe. London now runs more than 3,000 zero-emission buses, up from 30 electric buses in 2016, which TfL said is the largest zero-emission bus fleet in Western Europe.
“Since first publishing our Corporate Environment plan five years ago, we’ve already implemented a variety of measures that have had a demonstrable impact, such as transitioning more than a third of our bus fleet to zero emission,” said Lilli Matson, Chief Safety, Health and Environment Officer at TfL.
TfL expanded the Ultra Low Emission Zone to every London borough in 2023, which it said brought air quality benefits to the five million people living in outer London.
