Accountancy and business advisory firm BDO has recruited three new IT apprentices in Liverpool and London for the third year of its 18-month programme, which leads to a Level 3 IT qualification.

BDO announced the new intake in a statement, adding that the programme launched in 2023 in partnership with training provider LeepTalent.

Apprentices spend 18 months learning on the job across the firm’s IT function before completing a Level 3 IT qualification at the end of the programme.

The firm said the majority of its apprentices have gone on to take up permanent positions in its IT team once qualified.

The three new starters, who joined earlier this year, are based across BDO’s Liverpool and London offices alongside a central IT team of 500 people.

That team has more than doubled in size since 2020 and supports the firm’s 8,500 staff across 19 offices in the UK and Ireland.

The apprentices join more than 600 graduates, apprentices and industrial placement students who have started their careers at BDO in the past 12 months.

Abdirahman Ali joined the programme from a job as a retail manager and now works as a Senior Service Desk Analyst on the firm’s IT service desk.

“I joined BDO after working as a retail manager so it was a complete change of sector. I’ve really enjoyed learning and developing my skills on the job through the apprenticeship programme,” said Abdirahman Ali, Senior Service Desk Analyst at BDO.

“I was delighted to accept a permanent position once I qualified and have since been promoted to a Senior Service Desk Analyst, continuing to support our 8,500 people with their technology requirements,” Ali added.

“Having been involved in the recruitment and assessment process myself, I have seen first-hand the impressive level of talent and commitment to learning these young people bring to BDO,” said Nik Miller, Partner and Chief Technology Officer at BDO.

“Our investment in growing our IT apprenticeship scheme demonstrates the importance of technology and digital skills, and the role of our central operations teams, in enabling our client facing colleagues to deliver quality work,” Miller added.

How to apply

BDO advertises its apprenticeship, graduate and work experience roles through its careers site at careers.bdo.co.uk, where candidates can view current vacancies and submit applications.

The IT apprenticeship recruits in annual cohorts, with the 2026 intake having started earlier this year, so candidates applying now would be considered for the next round.

BDO said last month that it is on track to support more than 8,200 students through its work experience programmes this year.

The firm has run targeted insight programmes for the past five years as part of its commitment to improving diversity and social mobility within the profession.

BDO LLP is the UK and Ireland member of the BDO Global network, which employs 95,000 people across 870 offices in 169 countries and territories and reported revenues of US$11 billion.
