British Gas now installs air conditioning nationwide, a notable pivot for a company built on keeping British homes warm.
The rollout, launched in April 2026 alongside an in-store partnership with Currys, appears in owner Centrica’s 2026 interim results as part of a broader push to grow revenue per customer through new products and bundles.
The UK recorded its warmest June on record during the half, and Centrica noted that even its Severn gas power station benefited from higher electricity demand driven by heat.
Pricing and how it works
British Gas does not publish fixed prices for air conditioning and instead quotes online, with customers answering questions about their home, submitting photos for a refined estimate and optionally taking a video call with an adviser.
Portable units carry the lowest upfront cost, wall-mounted single-room systems sit in the middle and multi-room systems cost the most due to the extra equipment involved.
Every British Gas installation includes a five-year manufacturer guarantee on the unit.
Checkatrade puts a typical 12,000 BTU wall-mounted split system, suitable for an average bedroom, at £1,580 to £2,300 installed, while MoneyWeek reports ducted multi-room systems can reach £3,000.
Running a 2kW unit costs roughly 49p per hour at the current price cap unit rate of 24.67p/kWh.
Demand is growing fast, and over four million UK households had some form of air conditioning in 2025, more than double the two million in 2022, according to Uswitch data cited by MoneyWeek.
Fire sale
The launch of aircons sits alongside unusually strong heating sales for Centrica.
British Gas boiler sales rose 11% in the first half of 2026 against a market that contracted 4%, including 20% year-on-year growth in the warmest June on record, after the company moved away from a purely seasonal sales focus and reworked its end-to-end customer journeys. On-demand jobs grew 19% in the period.
The installations business feeds a wider engagement machine for the group.
The British Gas membership scheme, launched in May 2025, passed 1 million members during the half, with around 15% converting to paid products, and Home Services revenue grew 5% on higher smart meter and boiler installations.
Home Services customers held steady at 2.9 million with retention at 87%, giving British Gas a large installed base to sell cooling into as UK summers keep breaking records.
