The first batch of public tickets for the Bayeux Tapestry at the British Museum goes on sale at 10h00 on Wednesday (1 July), with standard adult entry priced at £33 and cheaper slots starting at £25.

The 70-metre embroidery returns to England for the first time in nearly 1,000 years, going on display in the museum’s Sainsbury Exhibitions Gallery from 10 September 2026 to 11 July 2027.

The Tapestry depicts the events leading to the Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest of England in 1066.

The British Museum expects very high demand and forecasts up to 7.5 million visitors across the full run, which would make it one of the most-visited events in the institution’s history.

Nicholas Cullinan, Director of the British Museum, described the Tapestry as one of the most important cultural artefacts from the medieval world.

Likely commissioned by a Norman patron and made by English embroiderers using manuscript drawings from Canterbury, the embroidery runs to 58 scenes, 626 characters and 202 horses across its 70 metres.

The artefact is on loan from the Bayeux Tapestry Museum in Normandy, which is closed for renovation until October 2027. It will return to France after the British Museum run.
