PlayStation price hikes for the UK
Key Points
- Sony PlayStation Plus Essential price rises in the UK from 20 May 2026 for new customers
- The monthly subscription climbs from £6.99 to £7.99 and the three month plan rises from £19.99 to £21.99
- Current UK subscribers keep their existing price unless their subscription changes or lapses
- All subscribers in Turkey and India face the new pricing immediately regardless of subscription status
- Sony cites ongoing market conditions as the reason for the rise
Sony will raise PlayStation Plus monthly subscriptions for new UK customers from £6.99 to £7.99 from Wednesday.
Three-month subscriptions to the same PS Plus Essential tier will climb from £19.99 to £21.99, taking effect on 20 May 2026. PlayStation announced the change in a post on its official X account on Sunday, blaming wider market pressure as the reason.
The same rate band applies across the US at $10.99 monthly and across the EU at €9.99, with three month plans at $27.99 and €27.99 respectively.
PS Plus Essential is Sony’s base subscription tier, providing online multiplayer access on PS5 and PS4, monthly downloadable games, and cloud storage for save files. Current UK subscribers keep their existing price for now, but with one important catch.
The change will hit existing customers if their subscription changes or lapses, meaning anyone who lets a sub expire or switches plans will pay the higher rate on resubscription. Letting auto renewal run on the same plan is the only route to staying at the old price.
Subscribers in Turkey and India face the new pricing immediately regardless of subscription status, with no explanation provided for the regional carve out.
The annual 12 month plan does not appear on the published rate card, which steers cost conscious users towards yearly billing.
Sony has not confirmed whether the Extra and Premium tiers, which respectively add the Game Catalogue library and a selection of classic titles, will also be repriced.
New customers paying month to month at the new rate will spend £95.88 over a year, well above the unchanged annual plan price.
Wednesday’s change is Sony’s first major UK price adjustment to the Essential tier monthly rate since September 2023, when the company repriced all three tiers upward following the PS Plus relaunch the year before.
The Essential monthly rate in the UK has held at £6.99 since that 2023 adjustment, even as gaming subscription competitors raised prices.
The hike fits a wider pattern of subscription gaming costs climbing through 2025 and 2026. Microsoft pushed Xbox Game Pass Ultimate up 50% in October 2025 before partially reversing the move earlier this year following customer pushback.
Sony itself increased PS5 console pricing in the UK, Europe, Japan and the US in April 2026, also blaming pressure across the global economic environment.
