Good news for Londoners who tap their bank card to ride the tube and buses

Key Points

  • TfL will now show customers when they have hit their daily or weekly spending cap in the TfL Go app.
  • Daily and weekly spending caps apply to customers who pay using contactless bank cards, and they differ based on where users have travelled.
  • TfL has also added other features for the iOS version of its app, including live bus tracking and better bus stop searches. Android users will get these features in the coming months.

In a welcome move for those who commute regularly in and around the capital, Transport for London (TfL) will now tell contactless customers when they have hit their daily or weekly spending cap.

The changes was announced as part of a raft of updates to the TfL Go official travel app, along with several other improvements to accessibility and journey planning.

From today, once they install or update their TfL Go app, customers will be able to use the app to check whether they have hit their daily or weekly cap. This information can be accessed by viewing their journey history in the mobile app.

TfL Go users can also opt in to a service which will analyse their travel data and provide insights into which daily cap could apply to their everyday commute.

Customers who tap their contactless card to travel on London’s transport network are charged depending on the zones in which they travel, but their daily and weekly travel costs are capped at a fixed amount.

Once this cap is reached, they will not be charged anymore for travelling within the same zones during that period.

Below are the daily and weekly spending caps that apply across Underground, DLR, London Overground, Elizabeth line and National Rail services.

Zone(s)One Day AnytimeMonday to Sunday
Zone 1 only£8.90£44.70
Zone 1 and 2£8.90£44.70
Zone 1, 2 and 3£10.50£52.50
Zone 1, 2, 3 and 4£12.80£64.20
Zone 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5£15.30£76.40
Zone 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6£16.30£81.60

Spending caps for buses and trams are simpler, as there is only a single fare without the complexity of per-zone pricing.

In addition to providing customers with spending cap information, the TfL Go app for iPhone and iPad has also been enhanced with better search functionality for bus stops, and these users can now also track their next bus in real time along its route.

TfL said these features are expected to roll out in the coming months to Android users. It should be noted that as of 2 April 2026, Google Maps also allows users in England to track buses in real time, making this same functionality available to Android users outside of the TfL Go app.

‘We are always looking to improve our free TfL Go app and these latest improvements aim to make it easier for people to see when they have reached the daily or weekly cap,” said Transport for London Customer Director Emma Strain.

“Adding these new features to the app, such as personalisation to its search functionality and making capping information easier to see, will help people plan journeys to their friends, family and other places of interest across London more easily.”

“We have a range of further improvements planned to the app in the coming months to further make travelling in London by public transport as simple as possible,” Strain said.
