Lyca Mobile switches on WiFi calling for all UK customers
Key Points
- Lyca Mobile has officially launched WiFi calling across all UK prepaid and postpaid plans at no additional cost.
- The feature routes voice calls over a WiFi or broadband connection where mobile signal is weak, benefiting customers in offices, basements and transport hubs.
- Compatible handsets include the latest Apple, Samsung and Android devices; a full list is published on the Lyca Mobile website.
- Calls made over WiFi count against a customer's existing plan minutes and cannot be used for international minutes or roaming data.
- Lyca Mobile runs on EE's UK network, which has supported WiFi calling since 2015; this marks Lyca's first formal rollout of the feature to all customers.
Lyca Mobile has enabled WiFi calling across all its UK plans, covering both prepaid and postpaid customers at no extra charge.
WiFi calling routes voice calls over a broadband or WiFi connection where mobile signal is limited or inconsistent, with Lyca saying the feature is particularly useful in office buildings, tube lines and other indoor locations.
Calls routed over WiFi count against a customer’s existing plan minutes, so there is no change to pricing. The feature does not apply to international minutes or roaming data.
Device support
The service works on a range of compatible handsets, including the latest Apple, Samsung, and Android devices. The group has published a full compatibility list on its website.
Customers on unsupported handsets will need to continue relying on 4G calling, which Lyca has supported since switching to EE’s network in 2023.
Lyca Mobile is an MVNO running on EE’s platform, which has supported WiFi calling since 2015. Many MVNOs, including newer and smaller providers powered by the same EE and O2 networks, offered WiFi calling for several years before Lyca.
The operator had appeared to test the feature quietly in early 2024 before pulling references to it from its website later that year. This announcement represents the first formal rollout.
“At Lyca Mobile, we are focused on making everyday connectivity as reliable and seamless as possible for our customers,” said Holly Flintoft, Head of Digital Sales UK at Lyca Mobile.
“By enabling WiFi Calling across all our mobile plans, we are taking another step in improving everyday connectivity for our customers. Whether at home, at work, or in places where mobile signal can fluctuate, WiFi Calling helps ensure people stay connected when it matters.”
