Forget Google Maps – Citymapper’s AI upgrade could make it the go-to app for navigating the UK’s chaotic public transport

Citymapper, the beloved urban mobility app long favored by Londoners for its precise handling of the city’s notoriously complex public transport network, has just rolled out a major upgrade that could challenge Google Maps’ dominance: AI-powered journey planning.

Announced on Thursday (4 March) the new features turn Citymapper from a reliable route-finder into what the company calls a “truly personalised travel companion.”

For the first time in a journey planning app, AI generates tailored recommendations based on a user’s historical travel patterns – learning preferences like minimising walking, prioritising speed over cost, or favouring reliable routes during rush hour.

When users search for a trip, the app will now highlight AI-recommended routes and provide concise, AI-generated summaries of the key tradeoffs. These include:

  • Overall reliability
  • Estimated time
  • Cost
  • Walking distance
  • Real-time service disruptions

This is particularly valuable in London, where TfL’s network of Tube, Overground, buses, Elizabeth line, National Rail, trams, and more can feel overwhelming – especially with frequent delays, signal failures, or weekend engineering works.

“Our vision has always been to make urban travel stress-free,” said Nithya Sowrarijan, Chief Product Officer of Via (Citymapper’s parent company since its 2023 acquisition).

“With the launch of these new features, Citymapper is moving beyond simple route-finding to a truly personalized travel companion. We’re not just showing the multitude of public transit options available to you, we’re guiding you towards the best journey for you, ensuring every public transit trip offered is thoughtfully meeting the needs of the rider.”

The rollout began with Citymapper CLUB subscribers (the app’s premium tier), with broader availability to all users expected in the coming weeks.

While the announcement didn’t limit it to specific cities, Citymapper has historically shone brightest in dense, transit-heavy metros like London, where it integrates deeply with real-time TfL data, offers detailed platform info, and excels at suggesting clever multimodal combinations that Google Maps sometimes overlooks.

Why this could dethrone Google Maps in London

Google Maps remains a powerhouse for global navigation, with strong driving directions, walking routes, and basic public transit info.

But in chaotic, high-frequency systems like London’s, users have long preferred Citymapper for its hyper-local smarts: accurate live bus countdowns, better disruption handling, options like “Bus+” or “Train+” for prioritising modes, and even quirky details like calorie burn or rain alerts.

The new AI layer aims to highlight that edge. Instead of parsing endless options manually, riders get intelligent nudges toward routes that match their habits – say, suggesting a slightly longer but more reliable Overground trip for someone who frequently avoids crowded Tubes, or flagging a bus alternative when a line is prone to delays.

For now, CLUB members can test the upgrade; everyone else should see it soon.

If early feedback mirrors past Citymapper launches, London commuters might soon wonder how they ever relied on anything else.
