Londoners furious as Primrose Hill is closed for New Year’s Eve

Londoners have voiced their outrage on social media over Primrose Hill being fenced off to prevent people from gathering in the park to watch the capital’s New Year’s Eve fireworks display.

In a statement earlier this week, the Metropolitan Police announced that metal barriers would be erected around the historic park to close it to the public for New Year’s Eve this year.

“Primrose Hill will be closed and locked during the New Year’s Eve period. The park will close at 8pm on Tuesday 30 December and reopen at 6am on Thursday 1 January,” the Royal Parks said.

Metropolitan Police Commander Nick John said Londoners should not try to gather at Primrose Hill this year, as they will be unable to enter.

“The Royal Parks are urging people not to try to gather at Primrose Hill this year and we would echo those calls,” Commander John said.

“Please make alternative plans. Anyone trying to access the park will find that it is not possible.”

Primrose Hill has in previous years been a popular destination for local revellers looking to catch a glimpse of the city’s New Year’s Eve fireworks display and celebrate with their friends and family.

With its high vantage point over the London skyline, the park offers a good view of the fireworks, although there are generally dense and busy crowds in the area that has led to several incidents in the past.

Taking to social media, Londoners have voiced their fury at the erection of metal barriers to prevent the entry of revellers.

Some called the closure of the area ‘draconian’ and ‘over-the-top’, while others mourned the interruption of a popular local tradition due to safety concerns.

“We would encourage the public to avoid parks such as Primrose Hill that will be closed, and instead spend their evening at one of the many organised events taking place across London,” Commander John said.
