O2 has quietly activated its next-generation 5G+ Standalone network across large parts of Surrey, delivering faster speeds, lower latency, and more reliable coverage to up to 1.2 million residents – without charging customers extra.
The rollout, announced on Tuesday (21 April), covers 33 large towns, 48 smaller towns, and 194 rural villages in the commuter-heavy county bordering London.
Key locations now benefiting include Guildford, Epsom, Dorking, Redhill, Reigate, Staines, Weybridge, Haslemere, and Woking.
Unlike earlier “non-standalone” 5G, which relied on existing 4G infrastructure, O2’s 5G+ (5G Standalone) uses a dedicated 5G core and new infrastructure. This results in a stronger, more resilient experience – ideal for high-demand areas like busy town centres, transport corridors, and growing business hubs.
Surrey functions as a major commuter belt and business location, with thousands of professionals travelling daily into London and a rising cluster of headquarters and innovation sites in aerospace, defence, tech, and life sciences. Improved reliability and reduced latency should help both daily commuters and local enterprises.
Part of a bigger £700 million push
The Surrey switch-on is the latest step in Virgin Media O2’s £700 million Mobile Transformation Plan. The investment covers new masts, small cells, 4G and 5G upgrades, automation, and new spectrum deployment throughout 2026.
O2 claims its 5G+ Standalone network is now the largest in the UK, recently reaching around 85-87% of the UK population across more than 700 towns and cities. Recent expansions have included the West Midlands, Essex, Dorset, and others.
The operator also recently launched O2 Satellite, enabling direct smartphone-to-satellite connections in remote areas with no traditional signal, another move aimed at closing rural connectivity gaps.
“Our new 5G+ network is now live in Surrey, providing an impressive upgrade for local people and businesses and creating new opportunities in and around the county.
“We are investing every single day to improve our mobile network and provide a more reliable experience for our customers, futureproofing our connectivity and paving the way for exciting innovations that lie ahead.”
O2 customers with a compatible device and an eligible plan can access 5G+ at no extra cost. They may need a recent SIM (from 2024 onwards) or to switch to a free eSIM.
The bigger picture for UK mobile
O2’s aggressive 5G Standalone rollout positions it strongly in the race for next-generation mobile capabilities. While competitors like EE also offer 5G Standalone (branded 5G+), O2 has pushed hard on the scale of its deployment and its focus on reliability and rural reach via satellite.
As UK mobile traffic continues to grow rapidly, operators are betting that a true 5G core – with better support for network slicing, lower latency, and future AI-driven services – will become a key differentiator.
For Surrey residents and businesses, the immediate impact is simpler. Smoother video calls on the train, faster downloads in town centres, more consistent signal in villages, and a more future-proof network – all included in existing plans.
