Actors Idris Elba and Meera Syal have been made a knight and a dame in the King’s New Year’s honours list.
Syal received a Damehood for services to literature, drama and charity, while Elba was given a Knighthood for services to young people.
Elba’s Knighthood was related to his charity work at the Elba Hope Foundation, which bridges Africa, the UK, and the US to support youth, agriculture, and sustainable development.
Others named in the honours list included Christopher Dean and Jayne Christensen, who were awarded a Knighthood and Damehood respectively for their services to Ice Skating and Voluntary Service, and Cynthia Erivo, who received an MBE for services to Music and Drama.
Composer Max Richter was awarded a CBE for his services to Music, and actor Warwick Davis was given an OBE for services to Drama and Charity.
Lionesses manager Sarina Weigman was awarded a Damehood, and Leah Williamson was awarded a CBE for her services to Association Football.
Singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding also received an MBE for her work on Biodiversity and the Climate.
Beyond community and entertainment honours, former NHS chief executive Amanda Pritchard received a Damehood for her services in healthcare, which include being the first woman in the health service’s history to hold the post.
Around three dozen NHS staff including nurses, surgeons, and GPs were also recognised for their service.
“This year’s Honours list celebrates the very best of Britain – people who put the common good ahead of themselves to strengthen communities and change lives,” said Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
“Their quiet dedication speaks to the decent, compassionate country we are proud to be. On behalf of the whole nation, thank you – and congratulations to everyone recognised today.”
