Formula 1 to return to Portugal in 2027
Formula 1 has announced that Portimão will host races in 2027 and 2028, marking a return of the sport to Portugal since the country last hosted a Grand Prix in 2021.
The Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, also known as Portimão, was a key venue in the sport’s return to racing during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The track offers a great technical challenge to drivers due to its dramatic changes in elevation, and is set in a region of Portugal known for its spectacular beaches and historic charm.
Portimão first hosted a Grand Prix in 1958, with some of the greatest drivers in Formula 1 history having won races at the track. These include Stirling Moss, Alain Prost, and Ayrton Senna.
The circuit was also the venue at which Lewis Hamilton broke Michael Schumacher’s record for the most all-time wins, with the driver securing his 92nd victory at the track in 2021.
Formula 1 has now signed a two-year agreement with the Portuguese government, Turismo de Portugal, and promoter Parkalgar to return the venue to the F1 race calendar

“The circuit delivers on-track excitement from the first corner to the chequered flag, and its energy lifts fans out of their seats.”
Dominecali thanked the Portuguese Prime Minister and other Ministers involved in facilitating the return of Portimão to the Formula 1 calendar.
