Gatwick Airport to get second runway

The application for a second runway at London’s Gatwick Airport has been granted development consent by the Secretary of State for Transport, Heidi Alexander.

The project comprises of the amendment of Gatwick Airport to support dual runway operations through the routine use of the existing northern runway and to accommodate up to 80 million passengers per annum.

As part of a privately funded scheme, the West Sussex airport plans to shift its emergency runway 12 metres to the north, allowing it to accommodate departures of narrow-body aircraft like the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737. This adjustment would make space for roughly 100,000 additional flights annually.

The development will include amendments to taxiways, terminal extensions and ancillary facilities, highways and rivers; as well as temporary construction works, mitigation works and other associated development.
