These 12 London high streets will get a big funding boost from Sadiq Khan

London mayor Sadiq Khan announced on Friday 11 July that he would allocate a total of £600,000 to rejuvenating 12 of London’s high streets.

The 12 boroughs selected will each get £50,000 to help them improve public spaces and boost the local economy as part of the Mayor’s High Street Place Labs programme.

High streets have faced major challenges since the pandemic, with everything the cost-of-living crisis, more reliance on deliveries, and an increasing trend towards working from home creating difficult conditions for high street shops.

The mayor’s new investment aims to help councils transform their high streets through creating more affordable workspaces, bringing empty shops and building back into use, improving the accessibility and quality of high streets, and growing their night-time economy by extending opening hours for pubs, restaurants, and nightclubs.

“I‘m determined to protect, restore and improve London’s high streets – which is why I’m so pleased to provide this new funding for boroughs across the capital that will help them grow and thrive,” Khan said.

“My High Street Place Labs programme plays an important role in driving progress on the London Growth Plan, which will deliver economic growth in every corner of our city to raise living standards, put more money in people’s pockets and enable us to invest in our public services.”

Below are the 12 high streets that will receive £50,000 each from the mayor’s programme:

  • North Finchley – Barnet
  • Barking Town Centre – Barking & Dagenham
  • Erith Town Centre – Bexley
  • West Ealing – Ealing
  • Edmonton Green – Enfield
  • Hayes – Hillingdon
  • Hounslow Town Centre – Hounslow
  • Finsbury Park – Islington
  • Surbiton Town Centre – Kingston Upon Thames
  • Catford Town Centre – Lewisham
  • Mitcham Town Centre – Merton
  • East Ham – Newham

Several of the boroughs benefitting from the programme have already outlined how they will use the funds.

Islington for example, aims to boost Finsbury Park’s nightlife economy, improving access to pubs, nightclubs, restaurants, theatres, and more.

Newham proposed making East Ham High Street more attractive and walkable for residents, while plans for Barking Town Centre aim to improve safety and the general attractiveness of its public space.
