The UK’s biggest container port has partnered with Lloyd’s Register (LR), Maersk, and the Port of Charleston to explore a nuclear-powered container shipping route between England and the east cost of the United States.

This marks a significant step forward towards the possible adoption of nuclear-powered trans-Atlantic commercial shipping. While nuclear-powered container ships are more costly and complex to operate, requiring specific provision and security at ports, they are also quicker and cleaner than the container ships travelling around the world today.

According to a previous analysis by LR, a single 15,000 TEU nuclear-powered containership could operate at 25 knots (39% faster than conventional vessels) and deliver up to 38% higher annual cargo capacity through more round voyages and improved container space.

The partnership announced on Thursday 3 September has produced a Pink Corridor project that is looking at the requirements for operating, securing, and safeguarding this theoretical nuclear-powered shipping route between Felixstowe in the UK and Charleston in the US.

This Pink Corridor project is centred on the idea of a conceptual nuclear-powered container ship, examining what will be needed to facilitate port access for this ship, as well as other aspects including ship security, cyber resilience, and insurance regimes.

The project aims to support broader maritime development under the US-UK Technology Prosperity Deal and its commitment to explore civil maritime nuclear applications, which includes the potential creation of a shipping corridor between the United States and UK.

LR and Maersk have previously established a joint development project for applying advanced nuclear power to container shipping, essentially developing the framework and technology for nuclear-powered cargo shipping across the Atlantic.

The Pink Corridor moves this one step closer to reality by laying the groundwork for the potential creation of a specific nuclear shipping route between Felixstowe and Charleston.

“The Pink Corridor joint development programme is an important step for the application of nuclear technology in merchant shipping,” said LR Global Containerships Segment Director Nick Gross.

“The partnership brings together industry-leading players across shipping, ports and classification, reflecting the growing interest in nuclear technology as a route to more sustainable maritime operations.”
