Crypto is back on Premier League shirts – and this time regulators are fine with it

Key Points

  • Circle becomes Chelsea's front-of-shirt sponsor from the 2026/27 season, debuting against Brighton on Sunday.
  • The FCA warned clubs in June about crypto sponsors that lack UK authorisation.
  • Circle holds an FCA electronic money issuer licence, unlike many earlier crypto sponsors.
  • USDC holds $73.9 billion of the $292.2 billion dollar stablecoin market, behind Tether's $183.3 billion.
  • The deal marks crypto's return to sports sponsorship after the 2022 pullback.

Chelsea played Brighton on Sunday (30 August) in shirts carrying the logo of a $73.9 billion stablecoin, two months after the Financial Conduct Authority warned clubs about crypto sponsors.

Chelsea and Circle Internet Group announced the partnership on Friday (28 August), making the New York-listed firm the club’s Principal Partner and official front-of-shirt sponsor. Circle and USDC branding will appear on the men’s, women’s and academy shirts across the 2026/27 season.
Circle

USDC is a stablecoin, a digital token that Circle pegs to the US dollar and backs with reserves it holds against every unit in circulation. Holders send it between accounts at any hour of the day without waiting on bank settlement times.

What the regulator told clubs

The Financial Conduct Authority told Premier League and other clubs in June to weigh the financial crime and reputational risks of taking money from crypto companies without authorisation.

Circle holds an electronic money issuer licence from the regulator in the UK, which puts the sponsor inside the perimeter the FCA drew.

That licence separates this deal from the wave of token and exchange sponsorships that arrived before the 2022 downturn. Several of those partners held no UK authorisation at all.

USDC accounts for $73.9 billion of the $292.2 billion in dollar-pegged stablecoins now in circulation, according to data from The Block, a share of 25.3%. Tether’s USDT holds $183.3 billion of the total, or 62.7%.Circle added roughly $1 billion to the USDC supply over the past week.

“This partnership represents a shared belief in where the world is headed,” said Kash Razzaghi, chief commercial officer at Circle. Jeremy Allaire, co-founder and chief executive, tied the deal to the company’s founding argument that money should move as freely as internet traffic does.

Crypto’s return to shirt sponsorship

The agreement comes as crypto firms rebuild a sports presence they cut back after the 2022 market downturn.

Crypto.com holds 20 years of naming rights at the Los Angeles arena under a $700 million deal, Tezos reportedly paid £20 million a year for Manchester United’s training kit, and OKX signed a partnership with Manchester City.

“This partnership with Circle positions Chelsea at the forefront of football’s digital evolution,” said Jason Gannon, president of Chelsea FC.

Sunday’s fixture is the men’s first home league game of the season at the 40,000-capacity Stamford Bridge. Chelsea Women also begin their inaugural season at the ground carrying the same branding.
