Anti-immigration riots continue

Police have used water cannon against rioters in Northern Ireland during a second night of anti-immigration protests. It dispersed a crowd of about 300 people who burned a truck and threw bricks and petrol bombs close to the Sandyknowes roundabout near Newtownabbey, eight miles north of Belfast. Unrest was also reported in Derry and Coleraine but overall there were fewer disturbances than on Tuesday, when mobs targeted ethnic minorities after a knife attack in north Belfast left a man severely injured on Monday night. Mike Ashley’s Frasers offers £1.73 billion to buy all of Hugo Boss

Businessman Mike Ashley’s Frasers has made a takeover offer for German fashion brand Hugo Boss. The retail group already owns just over a quarter of Hugo Boss, having steadily built up the stake since 2020, but said on Wednesday it wanted to buy the rest of it for €1.98 billion (£1.73 billion). Hugo Boss said it would “thoroughly examine the offer and issue a reasoned statement”. [BBC]

UK to launch CO₂ supply push as pubs prepare for bumper beer sales

Ministers will on Thursday launch a drive to shore up Britain’s supplies of carbon dioxide, used to make lager and other beers, as the country prepares for the start of the World Cup and a month of drinking. Peter Kyle, business secretary, wants the UK to have resilient supplies of CO₂ after the state was forced to prop up the industry on three occasions in the past decade. [Financial Times]

NHS replaces A&E receptionists with iPads

Accident & Emergency (A&E) patients will be forced to complete online questionnaires before getting treatment under NHS plans for iPad-style check-ins. The “high-tech concierge service” will act as a virtual receptionist, requiring patients to answer questions at kiosks or tablets to help determine what help they need. [Telegraph]

Brent pulled back toward $94 per barrel on Thursday, paring gains from earlier in the session after the US military announced it had completed its latest strikes on Iran, raising hopes that peace negotiations could resume.  On Wednesday, Oil was trading higher at $90.76. The pound is trading at $1.34, €1.16, and ¥9.06.
