- Backed by UK Civil Aviation Authority coordination and hailed by Health Innovation Minister as world-class innovation for faster NHS patient care
Matternet has announced the launch of drone operations in Central London to support the NHS. This marks the company’s first deployment in the United Kingdom and a significant step toward establishing a city-wide medical drone network, it said an accompanying statement.
Operating in partnership with Apian, Matternet’s M2 drone system will connect two of Central London’s busiest hospital campuses via bi-directional aerial routes.
The service aims to transport critical medical items, including diagnostic samples, laboratory specimens, pharmaceuticals, and other time-sensitive payloads, in minutes rather than hours.
London’s congested streets often cause delays in traditional ground transport. The new drone service is designed to improve hospital workflows, reduce delays in test results and medication delivery, and enhance the overall resilience of NHS logistics.
By using autonomous drones, the system also promises lower emissions compared to conventional vehicles.
“The UK is now home to world-class medical drone operations, leading the way in deploying innovative technologies to transform NHS patient care. By connecting hospital campuses in minutes rather than hours, drone delivery means faster test results, quicker access to critical medical supplies, and better care for people who need it most,” said Dr Zubir Ahmed, UK Health Innovation and Safety Minister.
The company has previously pioneered medical drone deliveries in Switzerland and the United States. Its expansion to the UK follows close coordination with the UK Civil Aviation Authority.
The initial routes connect two major hospital campuses, but there are already plans to expand the network to additional sites, payload types, and healthcare use cases across London.
The Matternet-Apian launch builds on Apian’s prior successes with other drone operators. The company, co-founded by NHS doctors, has already been operating drone deliveries of blood samples between Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals in partnership with Wing (Alphabet’s drone delivery arm).
Those flights have dramatically cut transport times from over 30 minutes by road to just a few minutes by air, while significantly reducing CO₂ emissions.
More recently, NHS drone services have expanded in south-west London, with drones transporting urgent pathology samples between sites such as Nelson Health Centre in Merton and St George’s Hospital in Tooting.
