Vodafone becomes first UK operator to sell dedicated 5G network slices to businesses

Vodafone has launched the UK’s first commercial 5G network slicing service for businesses.

Announced on Thursday (16 April), the new 5G+ Local Slicing offering allows organisations to access a dedicated slice of VodafoneThree’s 5G Standalone (5G SA) network with guaranteed performance across a defined local area of up to 5km².

This addresses a key limitation of traditional shared mobile networks, where high device density can lead to congestion and unreliable performance.

What is 5G network slicing and why does it matter?

Network slicing is one of the most transformative features of 5G Standalone architecture. It enables operators to create multiple virtual, isolated networks on the same physical infrastructure, each tailored with specific performance characteristics such as guaranteed bandwidth, low latency, or enhanced security.

Unlike best-effort public 5G, a dedicated slice provides service-level agreement (SLA)-backed performance. This is particularly valuable in environments where thousands of devices compete for resources simultaneously.

Vodafone’s 5G+ Local Slicing is designed for mission-critical use cases, including:

  • Manufacturing and smart factories
  • Logistics hubs and warehouses
  • Healthcare providers
  • Retail environments
  • Universities and campuses
  • Transport hubs, stadiums, and large public venues
  • Construction sites

The service targets scenarios where network congestion could disrupt operations, such as real-time IoT monitoring, automated guided vehicles, live video broadcasting, or high-density attendee connectivity at events.

Backed by major investment

The launch comes shortly after the completion of the Vodafone-Three merger and aligns with the combined entity’s commitment to invest £11 billion over the next decade in building one of Europe’s most advanced 5G networks.

VodafoneThree said it aims to deliver 5G Standalone coverage to 99% of the UK population by 2030 and 99.96% by 2034. The merger has already enabled early benefits through Multi Operator Core Network (MOCN) sharing, removing thousands of square kilometres of not-spots and improving 4G speeds for millions of customers.

“Vodafone Business is first in the UK to make network slicing real for enterprise, and that matters because businesses need more from their mobile connectivity.

“Local Slicing changes that, with connectivity engineered around the needs of a business. Enterprise customers can now own their network performance, not just hope for it,” said Nick Gliddon, Business Director at VodafoneThree.
