Chinese e-commerce powerhouse JD.com has thrown down the gauntlet to Amazon in the UK with the launch of its international platform Joybuy on Monday (16 March).
Joybuy promises competitive prices on trusted brands combined with aggressive fast delivery – including free same-day shipping on orders over £29 in covered areas.
Joybuy, often dubbed the “Chinese Amazon” due to its full-category online retail model backed by JD.com’s massive logistics network, debuted simultaneously in six European markets: the UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg.
The move marks a significant step in JD.com’s push beyond China, where it ranks as one of the country’s largest retailers and sits 44th on the Fortune Global 500.
What set it apart from Amazon?
In the UK, Joybuy is emphasizing speed and value as its core differentiators.
Customers in Greater London, Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham, Oxford, and Cambridge – covering more than 17 million people or about 4.5 million households – can access the platform’s “Double 11” delivery promise right from launch. These include:
- Orders placed before 11 a.m. arrive before 11 p.m. the same day.
- Orders placed before 11 p.m. arrive the next day.
Same-day delivery comes at no extra cost for orders exceeding £29, with no “speed fees” tacked on, a direct jab at competitors where premium delivery often requires a subscription or higher thresholds.
Nationwide, shoppers get next-day or standard delivery options, supported by JoyExpress, JD.com’s in-house last-mile logistics arm using electric vans and cargo bikes.
The company operates from more than 60 European warehouses, including key UK sites in Milton Keynes and Luton totalling over 90,000 square meters with automation features.
Joybuy positions itself as a first-party retailer rather than a pure third-party marketplace, stocking and controlling much of its inventory for greater reliability.
The platform offers products across tech (Apple, DJI, HP, Lenovo, LG, Xiaomi, PlayStation, Sony), home appliances (Braun, De’Longhi, Hisense, Philips, Samsung), beauty (L’Oréal Paris), home goods (Emma, Bodum, BRITA, The Pink Stuff), groceries, everyday essentials, baby products, and more.
Dedicated brand stores provide immersive shopping, with interactive features like 3D product views and haptic feedback demos on select items.
Launch deals
To sweeten the deal, Joybuy introduced daily “Lightning Offers” for limited-time deals and JoyPlus membership at £3.99 per month (£2.99 for students), which includes unlimited free delivery (no minimum spend), exclusive promotions, and Joybuy Points on purchases.
A 30-day free trial and welcome offers are available to new users.
“The UK and Europe have some of the savviest shoppers in the world, and we’re bringing our decades of retail and logistics experience to the UK and Europe to change the way people shop online for the better,” a spokesperson said,
“By owning the process from the warehouse to the front door, we’re making same-day delivery the new standard. British shoppers have long had to settle for a trade-off between price and speed, often paying a premium to get their orders more quickly. We’re here to change that.”
