Corbyn to act as Your Party parliamentary leader

Jeremy Corbyn is set to become the parliamentary leader of Your Party following a decisive victory for his supporters in the fledgling left-wing group’s first leadership election, results announced on Thursday (26 February 26) show.

Corbyn’s slate, ‘The Many’, secured 14 of the 24 seats on the Central Executive Committee (CEC), the party’s governing body under its collective leadership model.

Zarah Sultana’s ‘Grassroots Left’ slate won seven seats, with three going to independents. Turnout stood at 61.8%, with 25,347 votes cast out of 40,985 verified members.

Both Corbyn and Sultana were elected to the CEC as public office holders, alongside Laura Smith (from The Many) and Grace Lewis (from Grassroots Left).

The CEC will now appoint key officer roles, including chair, deputy chair, secretary, treasurer, political officer, and spokesperson, at its first meeting.

While the party formally operates without a single leader, Corbyn’s majority control positions him to take the parliamentary leadership role in Westminster, where he will represent the group alongside fellow Independent MPs.

In a statement released shortly after the results, Corbyn struck an optimistic tone, emphasising unity after months of internal strife.

“I am delighted that members have voted for a mass, socialist party that takes the fight to Starmer and Farage,” he said.

“Now, the real work begins. We have a precious opportunity to unite our movement around a bold vision for this country – one that creates a more caring, equal and peaceful world for all. I look forward to working with all members to make this vision a reality.”

He added that the movement must come together to defeat ‘the fear, divisiveness and racism of Reform’, signalling a focus on opposing both the Labour government under Keir Starmer and the rising right-wing challenge from Nigel Farage’s Reform UK.

Corbyn also called for building a ‘positive and inclusive party where all members feel empowered to share their ideas’.

The election outcome ends a turbulent chapter for Your Party, launched in July 2025 by Corbyn and Sultana as a breakaway from Labour’s perceived rightward shift.

The pair aimed to create a ‘new kind of political party’ rooted in communities, trade unions, and social movements, initially attracting around 800,000 sign-ups to a mailing list expressing interest.

However, unity unraveled quickly. In September 2025, Sultana launched a separate membership portal charging £55 for paid membership, which Corbyn dismissed as a false membership system and urged supporters to ignore. Sultana hit back, accusing the party of being run by a sexist boys’ club.

Disputes escalated over funding, with ongoing legal exchanges about early donations. Further rifts emerged around the inclusion of pro-Gaza independents; Sultana argued there was no place for social conservatives, while two Independent Alliance MPs quit in November citing persistent infighting and a struggle for power.
