Crucial reminder for Brits planning to travel in 2026

Those looking at travelling abroad this year should take care their passport is secure before and while they travel, and that it is not one of the millions set to expire in 2026.

Freedom of Information data obtained by Co-op Insurance showed that more than 4.5 million passports are set to expire this year.

With certain countries requiring that passports be valid within a certain date upon travel, the insurer urged Brits to ensure they renew their passport in time to avoid any issues.

It noted that the United States requires a passport to be valid for at least six months beyond the intended departure date for entry, while the EU Schengen Area requires that passports be valid for at least three months after the day of departure.

If you are prevented from travelling for these reasons, you may be unable to claim from your travel insurance for your missed flight or cancelled accommodation.

Last year also saw a significant rise in the number of passports reported as lost or stolen in the UK, with incidents increasing by 62% to a total of 370,000.

While most passports were lost or stolen in the UK, the countries where the most passports were reported lost or stolen outside of the UK were Australia and Spain.

Losing your passport while you are abroad or before you travel can seriously jeopardise your plans, as this comes with a cost of £94.50 for digital renewal, and there is no guarantee as to how long it will take to get your new passport, unless you opt to spend an additional £222 to fast-track your replacement.

“With many of us planning our travels for the year ahead, it’s important that you take the time to review your travel documentation and cover,” said Co-op Insurance Head of Travel Ellis German.

“Unfortunately, our research indicates that there’s been a rise in the number of people who’ve had to apply for a replacement passport due to theft, loss or damage, which could have had a significant impact on travel plans.”

“What’s more, with millions of Brits’ passports expiring this year, leaving it late to renew or replace a passport could mean that you risk putting your holiday in jeopardy,” German said.

“It’s therefore vital to ensure that your passport and travel documentation is valid for your travels. It’s also crucial that you have the right cover in place so that you can enjoy peace of mind knowing that you’re fully protected while you’re away.”
