Former Conservative Home Secretary Suella Braverman is the latest Conservative Party member to defect to Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party.
Speaking at an event today, Braverman, who is the MP for Fareham and Waterlooville, announced that she is defecting to Reform.
Her defection closely follows that of Robert Jenrick, who was expelled from the Conservative Party hours before announcing that he too was joining Reform UK.
In her announcement, she decried the decline of Britain on the world stage.
“We stand at a crossroads. We can either continue down this route of managed decline to weakness and surrender, or we can fix our country, reclaim our power, rediscover our strength,” Braverman said.
“I believe that a better Britain is possible. And because I believe that is possible, today I am announcing that I have resigned the Conservative whip and my party membership of 30 years.”
“And because I believe with my heart and soul that a better future is possible for us, I am joining Reform UK,” she said.
Braverman said she feels ‘at home’ at Nigel Farage’s party, which has proposed tough new restrictions on immigration, some of which are in line with her own stance on the issue during her tenure as Home Secretary under Rishi Sunak’s Conservative government.
Braverman has previously called for the United Kingdom to leave the European Convention on Human Rights, arguing that Britain should not be beholden to a foreign entity on its treatment of people within its borders.
She has also more recently attacked the Labour government over its plans to implement a youth mobility scheme and scrap trial by jury for specific offenses.
Braverman joining Reform UK has turned the trickle of Conservative politicans defecting to Farage’s party into a steady stream, with Farage’s party becoming increasingly stocked with the same figures as the government that suffered a resounding electoral defeat to Labour in 2024.
Suella Braverman’s defection to Reform also comes less than one year after her husband, Rael Braverman, abruptly left the party following its criticism of Suella Braverman’s handling of the Afghan data leak.
When Suella Braverman made her announcement today, Rael Braverman also announced he would be rejoining Reform, saying that Britain needs the ‘courage’ and ‘honesty’ Reform will deliver.
