Here are 5 important things happening in the UK today, Monday (5 January 2026):
- UK poised for rise in unemployment in 2026: The UK is poised for a rise in unemployment in 2026 fuelled by the collapse of “zombie” companies that have struggled to adapt to a rise in business costs, according to a report. At the start of what could be a pivotal year for the economy, the Resolution Foundation said businesses were grappling with a “triple whammy” of multiyear increases in interest rates, energy prices and the minimum wage that could “finish off” some underperforming companies. - Junk food advert ban comes into force: Junk food adverts are banned on television and online starting today as part of a drive to tackle childhood obesity. The UK-wide ban stops food and drinks high in fat, salt and sugar (HFSS) being advertised on TV before 21:00 and at any time online. It applies to products considered to be the biggest drivers of childhood obesity, including soft drinks, chocolates and sweets, pizzas and ice creams. [BBC]
- Business confidence weakens: Business confidence has weakened further, with companies cutting investment in reaction to tax rises and increasing labour costs, a leading survey has found. Quarterly research from the British Chambers of Commerce, canvassing more than 4,600 businesses across the UK, also found that only 46 per cent of companies expected increased sales this year, the lowest level in three years. Twenty-four per cent believed their turnover would fall. [The Times]
- Brits face blizzards as millions return to work: Blizzard conditions are forecast as Britons return to work and school today – with amber warnings in force across parts of the UK. Temperatures overnight into Monday fell as low as -9.3C in Benson, south Oxfordshire, bringing the risk of icy conditions on the roads. The frosty conditions coincide with many workers resuming their daily commutes after the Christmas break, and schools in most areas reopening. [SkyNews]
