  • Record number of migrants cross the Channel: More than 800 people crossed the Channel in small boats on Saturday, a record for a day in December, according to the Home Office. December is traditionally one of the quietest months for Channel crossings, as a combination of low temperatures and stormy weather makes the journey particularly difficult. Poor visibility and less daylight have also been cited as factors influencing the crossings. [Guardian]
  • Doctors return to work in England after five-day strike: Doctors in England will return to work on Monday after a planned five-day walkout over ongoing pay disputes. The strike went ahead amid surging flu cases, and despite last-minute talks, external between the British Medical Association (BMA) and the government. BMA members rejected a new government offer that aimed to tackle issues with training and job security. [BBC]
  • Right to Buy cost taxpayers £900 million: Councils have spent more than £900m buying back Right to Buy homes to plug social housing shortfalls, a Telegraph investigation has found. In some cases, local authorities paid up to 88 times more than the properties were originally sold for, a Freedom of Information (FOI) request revealed. The scheme, introduced in 1980 under Margaret Thatcher, until recently allowed council tenants the right to purchase their homes at a discount of up to 70%. However, decades of selling properties without building enough replacements has resulted in councils having to reacquire the homes – at the taxpayers’ expense. [Telegraph]
  • Thousands face care home evictions: Thousands of elderly and vulnerable people are being forced to move out of their care homes, with little warning and often in distressing circumstances. There has been a steep rise in so-called “care home evictions”, with nearly 7,000 residents in England told their contracts were being terminated with just 28 days’ notice last year.
