5 important things happening in the UK today

Here are 5 important things happening in the UK today, Tuesday (7 October 2025).

  • Starmer warns of ‘un-British’ protests: Prime Minister Keir Starmer has urged students not to join pro-Palestinian protests on Tuesday, the second anniversary of the 7 October Hamas attack on Israel, warning of “rising antisemitism on our streets”. Starmer said it was “un-British” to hold protests on the anniversary, which, he said, had been used by some as a “despicable excuse to attack British Jews”. The UK is seeing heightened security to protect Jewish communities, following last week’s deadly attack on a synagogue in Manchester. Universities in some parts of the UK are bracing for demonstrations on Tuesday, with students from London colleges planning a joint march in the capital. [BBC]
  • 64% of Tory members want pact with Reform UK: According to new polling by YouGov, almost two thirds of members want a pact, and almost half of them would support a full merger. The same poll found that half of members want Kemi Badenoch to be replaced as Tory leader before the next election, while 46% want her to stay on. [Guardian]
  • Reeves steps ups efforts to secure more company listings for the UK: The UK Chancellor will on Tuesday intensify her push to persuade tech firms and investors that the country is an attractive listing venue as the Treasury considers new measures to encourage companies to float in London. Rachel Reeves is due to attend JPMorgan’s “Tech Stars” event in London as the Treasury examines ways to make listing in London more attractive, including granting tax relief to entrepreneurs on proceeds from a flotation, according to three people familiar with the discussions. Officials are also discussing the option of giving tax relief on the costs of an initial public offering, with conditions being set on the firm and founder remaining in the UK for a defined period, the people added. A months-long investigation began last December when a box on its way to Hong Kong was found at a warehouse near Heathrow Airport containing around 1,000 iPhones. [Sky News]
