Oxford Street to go car-free this Sunday – All the details
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has announced that Oxford Street will be closed to all traffic except for pedestrians on Sunday 21 September for a one-day event featuring live performance, food stalls, art, and more.
The event, called ‘This is Oxford Street’, will take place between 12pm and 8pm on Sunday and aims to show what the capital’s famous high street could be like if it was pedestrianised permanently.
Khan has pledged to pedestrianise the street as part of his plan to rejuvenate the area, and his commitment received majority support during a public consultation.
‘This is Oxford Street’ will be hosted in partnership with a range of global brands and retailers that will host activations, pop-up stalls, and more on the day. The event will be free to enter and will feature two stages with live music.
The NBA and Major League Baseball have also been announced as event partners, and will host a pop-up court and batting and catching cages. A 100-metre colourful vinyl floor will be laid over the street itself during the event.
Attractions at ‘This is Oxford Street’ will include:
- Live music, including DJs, acoustic sets and performances from acts on three stages
- Activations by retailers and shops
- Art installations
- An urban forest
- An exhibition of the history of Oxford Street
- Food and drink from around the world
- Coffee and cocktail bars
- A chill-out zone
- Activities for children such as a Literary Festival, poetry and storytelling, face painting, games and competitions
The full programme for the event can be found on the Oxford Street website.
“’This is Oxford Street’ is going to be a landmark, free event open for everyone and will showcase the nation’s high street as you have never seen it before, offering a glimpse of what it could look like in the future,” Khan said.
“From food and drink from different cultures to live main stage music, to a Literary Festival for children and action-packed activations from major brands, shops and event partners, it is going to be a fantastic day.”
“As Mayor, I have pledged to pedestrianise Oxford Street and I am determined to unlock its true potential to deliver a world-class, accessible, clean street for everyone as we build a better, greener and safer London for all,” he added.
The event will result in several road closures in the surrounding area and disruptions to bus services. Travel advice is available on the Transport for London (TfL) website.
