US President Donald Trump has called on companies to end quarterly reporting, as it will allow executives more time to focus on improving their business.

In a post published on Truth Social on Monday morning (15 September), Trump said that moving to bi-annual reporting periods would also save money.

Subject to SEC Approval, Companies and Corporations should no longer be forced to “Report” on a quarterly basis (Quarterly Reporting!), but rather to Report on a “Six (6) Month Basis.” This will save money, and allow managers to focus on properly running their companies. Did you ever hear the statement that, “China has a 50 to 100 year view on management of a company, whereas we run our companies on a quarterly basis???” Not good!!!

Trump had previously mooted the idea of asking the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) to consider eliminating the requirements for public companies during his first White House term.

To encourage executives to adopt a longer-term outlook, the European Commission eliminated mandatory quarterly reporting in 2013 and shifted to a twice-yearly format – a move also adopted in the United Kingdom, which was still part of the European Union at the time.

Despite this change, many major firms still publish quarterly updates, which remain a legal requirement in the United States.

In an op-ed for the Financial Times in January, CEO of Norges Bank Investment Management Nicolai Tangen said that his group had seen clear benefits from stepping off the quarterly reporting treadmill.

“Our own experience suggests that a reduction in reporting volume can be beneficial. Since moving from quarterly to semi-annual reports, we have found ourselves better positioned to focus on what truly matters: long-term strategy and sustainable value creation.

“This isn’t just about saving time and resources – it’s about fundamentally changing how businesses think and operate,” he said.

Tangen added that quarterly reporting gives companies breathing room to focus on strategic planning and long-term investments.
