  • Reeves to shut down more regulators: Chancellor Rachel Reeves has told private equity bosses that she plans to shut down more regulators across the UK as she attempts to drive growth across Britain’s subdued economy. Reeves highlighted her recent decisions to sack the chair of the competition watchdog, shut down the payments regulator, and “severely” constrain the Financial Ombudsman Service, which UK banks have long lobbied to curtail.   • HMRC doubles size of tax evasion team: HM Revenues and Customs (HMRC) has doubled the number of staff trained in tax evasion surveillance, new data shows. Some 337 workers were trained in tax evasion in the 2023-24 year at a cost of £580,403, according to figures released by a Freedom of Information request. [Telegraph]
  • UK rental listings fall at the fastest rate since Covid: UK rental listings dropped in August at the fastest rate since the first Covid-19 lockdown, according to a leading property survey, suggesting landlords are leaving the market because of tax rises and the upcoming renters’ rights bill.   • MPs push for changes to Lifetime ISAs: Ministers have not gone far enough in reforming Lifetime Isas (LISAs) despite being warned these products were not suitable for everyone, Treasury Committee has warned.
