These new devices are appearing on streetlamps in central London – here’s what they are and how they work

Ee 5g Mast

Mobile network operator EE has announced the rollout of new miniature mobile masts which will be attached to streetlamps in central London.

The rollout, which is being done in conjunction with broadband company Ontix, will see the installation of 80 of these small cells across the City of Westminster. The masts are capable of supporting both 4G and 5G traffic are being placed to enhance the reliability and high-speed connectivity of EE’s network, the mobile operator said.

“The small cells have been specifically designed for lamppost deployment, prioritising safety and weight considerations, and delivering concentrated coverage on specific, high-demand areas,” EE said. “This targeted approach not only enhances capacity in some of London’s busiest zones but also addresses the unique challenges posed by Westminster’s dense urban environment.”

EE noted that a key feature of this deployment is its seamless integration into the existing landscape.

The small cell equipment is painted to blend with street furniture, minimising visual impact while maximising functionality. This approach also declutters the urban environment by making use of existing structures, reducing the need for additional street-level hardware.

By carefully preparing each location in advance, EE said it is able to significantly reduce deployment time and minimise disruption in these high-traffic areas.

“This proactive approach is particularly vital in Westminster’s complex urban setting, where avoiding inconvenience to residents, businesses, and visitors is paramount,” it said.

“This innovative small cell deployment with Ontix enhances 4G and 5G mobile connectivity for EE customers across the City of Westminster, one of London’s busiest areas, serving not only as the centre of UK government but also a focal point for tourism and business,” said James Hope (Director of Mobile Radio Access Networks at EE).

“This project is the latest milestone in our network densification efforts as we continue to boost mobile capacity where it’s needed most across the UK,” he said.
