Google recently hosted its I/O 2025 conference, where it made 100 new announcements – and almost all of them were to do with AI.

Among the biggest announcements were a battery of improvements to Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, that encompass everything from better integration with Google apps such as Google Maps, Calendar, and Tasks to new functionality in its Canvas creative space that lets you create new outputs like infographics and web pages, or even immersive quizzes.

Other announcements include new generative AI tools, allowing users to generate video with audio, as well as generate images with more clarity in fine details like skin, fur, and intricate textures.

Google said the Gemini app now has more than 400 million monthly active users, and the company looks poised to push its Gemini assistant and AI features across even more of its products going forward.

Gemini is coming to Google Chrome

One of the biggest announcements from Google I/O 2025 was the rollout of Gemini to the Chrome web browser. The first version of this implementation allows Gemini to clarify complex information on any web page or to summarise whole pages. Later, Google says that Gemini will be able to work across multiple tabs and navigate websites for you itself.

Separate to the rollout of Gemini in Chrome, Google also announced AI Mode: an end-to-end AI Search experience that brings more AI-powered functionality to Google’s Search function and find ‘hyper-relevant’ content that matches user queries.

“AI Mode is where we’ll first bring Gemini’s frontier capabilities, and it’s also a glimpse of what’s to come. As we get feedback, we’ll graduate many features and capabilities from AI Mode right into the core Search experience,” Google said.

“For questions where you want an even more thorough response, we’re bringing deep research capabilities into AI Mode with Deep Search.”

Google said its Deep Search feature can issue hundreds of searches, reason across disparate pieces of information, and create an expert-level fully-cited report in just minutes, saving you hours of research.

As with Gemini, Google has also begun to build AI agent functionality into its Search platform, allowing the tool to make decisions and handle more tasks autonomously.

AI-powered smart glasses

AI is fully at the centre of Google’s strategy at the moment, as is true for other tech giants clamouring for a share of the rapidly growing market.

The company even plans to bring AI to Android XR headsets, sharing a sneak peek on how its Gemini assistant will work with smart glasses and other headsets built on the Android XR platform.

“With Gemini on these devices, you can have an assistant that’s right there with you, sharing your vantage point, ready to help whenever you start the conversation,” Google said.

The glasses teased by Google are equipped with a camera, microphones and speakers, as well as an in-lens display, all of which works together with the Gemini assistant in your phone.

“Pairing these glasses with Gemini means they see and hear what you do, so they understand your context, remember what’s important to you and can help you throughout your day,” it said.

The company announced that it has partnered with a number of eyewear brands, starting with Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, to create glasses built on the Android XR platform.

For an exhaustive list of the announcements from Google I/O 2025, Google has published all 100 of its updates on its official blog.
