Muhammad was the most popular name for baby boys in England and Wales for the third year running in 2025, while Olivia topped the girls’ list for a fourth consecutive year with 2,386 registrations.

Lily climbed one place to second among girls’ names with 2,249 registrations, figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on Thursday (9 July) showed. Amelia, previously second, dropped to third with 2,153.

Noah held second place for boys, with Leo third and Luca fourth. Arthur, Oliver, George, Oscar, Theodore and Freddie completed the boys’ top ten.

Isla ranked fourth for girls with 1,959 registrations, followed by Florence, Freya, Poppy, Elsie and Ivy. Isabella entered the girls’ top ten in tenth place with 1,690 registrations.

New entries and biggest movers

Seven names entered the girls’ top 100 in 2025: Eliana, Gracie, Anaya, Alba, Marnie, Lilah and Frankie. Carter, Ruben, Stanley and Vincent entered the boys’ top 100.

Eliana recorded the largest rise among girls’ names, climbing 54 places to 62nd. Mabel rose 21 places to 16th, while Bonnie recorded the biggest fall, dropping 32 places to 48th.

The ONS said Ellie, Amelie and Jessica fell out of the girls’ top 100, while Grayson, Brody and Bodhi dropped out of the boys’ list.

The rankings use birth registration data from the 2025 calendar year and count exact spellings separately, meaning similar names with different spellings rank individually. Names registered two times or fewer were redacted to protect confidentiality.
