UK mobile customers are increasingly turning away from the traditional big networks in favor of cheaper virtual operators (MVNOs) that deliver better perceived value, even when they run on the same underlying infrastructure.
Consumer champion Which? has released its latest mobile network satisfaction survey for 2026, based on responses from 5,137 adult customers surveyed in January 2026.
The results paint a clear picture: budget-friendly MVNOs dominate the top of the rankings, while the major operators – EE, Vodafone, O2, and Three – largely languish in the bottom half.
Talkmobile emerged as the clear winner with an overall Customer Score of 83% (up from 80% the previous year). The score combines overall satisfaction with the likelihood to recommend the provider.
In second place was Tesco Mobile at 81%, followed by a three-way tie for third on 79% between Smarty, Giffgaff, and Voxi.
At the other end of the spectrum, Three UK brought up the rear with just 65%, narrowly ahead of O2 on 67% and Lyca Mobile on 68%.

Why MVNOs are winning
Nearly all the top-performing networks are MVNOs that piggyback on the big four’s physical infrastructure but offer lower prices and more flexible plans.
Talkmobile (which runs on Vodafone’s network) topped the chart for the second year running, with strong marks for value, reliability, and customer service. Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff (on O2), and Smarty (on Three) also performed well, suggesting that customers are more forgiving, or simply happier, when they’re paying less.
Premium pricing on the main networks can lead to higher expectations, which aren’t always met, while MVNO customers often feel they’re getting a bargain.
Smarty and Three share much of the same network infrastructure, yet Smarty ranks near the top while Three sits at the bottom. This highlights how pricing, customer service, and overall experience can matter more than raw technical performance for satisfaction scores.
Problems for the big four
Among the traditional operators:
- EE performed best of the majors at 74%, showing modest improvement but still only mid-table.
- Vodafone scored 72%.
- O2 and Three rounded out the bottom, with Three receiving particularly poor feedback across categories like network reliability and technical support.
This customer satisfaction picture contrasts with some technical performance reports. For instance, independent tests from Opensignal in early 2026 showed EE leading in overall speeds, reliability, and consistent quality, while Three often excels in peak 5G download speeds in certain areas.
However, Which?’s survey focuses on real-world customer experience rather than lab-style speed tests, including factors like value for money, ease of contact, and willingness to recommend.
