Major new speed limits coming for London

Transport for London has confirmed plans to introduce significant new speed limit restrictions in and around the city over the coming year on more than 15km of roads.

The plans are outlined in the transport body’s new 2026 business plan, which was published this week.

“In early 2026, we will lower speed limits on more than 15km of roads, including the A1 in Haringey, A23 in Croydon, A24 in Sutton and the
A213 in Greenwich. This builds on the schemes that have already introduced 20mph speed limits on 267km of our roads,” the transport body said.

“Through this plan, we will continue to identify opportunities to lower speed limits to save lives and improve consistency, to make it easier for drivers to understand so that they can more easily comply with speed limits.”

It added that the number of people killed and seriously injured on borough roads in London reduced by 34% following the implementation of 20mph speed limits between 1989 and 2013.

There was a 35% reduction in collisions and 36% reduction in casualties on 20mph roads in the boroughs, against a background trend of 12% fewer collisions and casualties across all borough roads.

“We commissioned an analysis of the first phase of our programme to
lower speed limits, which introduced a 20mph speed limit on our roads within the Inner Ring Road in 2020. The programme will continue to lower speed limits to improve safety on London’s roads. Further details will be published in our Vision Zero action plan 2 in 2026,” it said.
